Huge scandal. Conceição suspended for 4 months over monkey gesture
The CONMEBOL Disciplinary Committee has delivered a tough verdict following a high-profile incident at the South American U-17 Championship.
Details: According to Ge Globo, Palmeiras forward Eduardo Conceição has been suspended for 4 months for making a monkey gesture during a match. However, this action was not an act of racism on his part, but rather a radical form of protest.
The scandal erupted during a heated clash in which Brazil's youth team thrashed their Argentine rivals 3-0. During the match, Eduardo was subjected to racist abuse by one of the Argentine players and immediately reported it to the referee. Nevertheless, the match official ignored the Brazilian's complaint and did not activate the official anti-racism protocol.
The striker responded right on the pitch. After scoring Brazil's third goal against Argentina, Eduardo celebrated by mimicking monkey movements. With this act, the forward aimed to draw public attention to the cover-up of the issue and the inaction of the officiating crew. It's worth noting that CONMEBOL also sanctioned the other party involved — Argentine midfielder Benítez, who provoked the scandal, was punished as well.
Despite the protest’s underlying motives, the South American confederation deemed the Brazilian's gesture unacceptable and issued a lengthy ban. Moreover, the federation has already submitted an official request to FIFA demanding that Eduardo’s suspension be extended worldwide, which would prevent him from playing for Palmeiras in any competition.
