Honduras Eyes 2026 World Cup Return Under Reinaldo Rueda
With the 2026 World Cup drawing closer, Honduras is determined to return to football’s biggest stage after missing the past two editions. Led by Colombian manager Reinaldo Rueda, the national team is rebuilding after finishing last in the 2022 Octagonal with just four points.
In an interview with AS, Rueda acknowledged the emotional burden carried by this generation and emphasized the importance of overcoming the setbacks since Brazil 2014. Honduras came close to qualifying for Copa América after a 2-0 win over Mexico, but hopes faded with a 3-0 loss in the return leg.
Now, with the expanded 48-team format and the three host nations (USA, Mexico, Canada) already qualified, Concacaf has five remaining slots—three direct and two playoff spots. Yet Rueda cautioned that qualification remains challenging due to the rapid rise of Caribbean sides bolstered by European-based players.
Honduras begins its qualifying campaign on June 7 against the Cayman Islands, followed by a match against Antigua and Barbuda on June 10. For Rueda and his squad, the road to redemption starts now.
