Hometown rejects Schumacher's honorary citizenship proposal
Kerpen, the hometown of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher, has refused to grant the racing icon honorary citizenship. The decision sparked outrage from Michael's brother, Ralf Schumacher, who expressed his disappointment on Instagram.
The proposal, initiated by Schumacher's fan club in January 2024, sought to recognize Michael's contributions by naming him an honorary citizen of Kerpen. However, local politicians across all parties showed little enthusiasm for the idea.
Ralf directed much of his criticism toward the SPD party, particularly its leader Andreas Lipp, who had previously supported the proposal but ultimately decided to withdraw his backing.
Fans of Schumacher were equally dismayed, flooding social media with comments supporting the racing legend. Many argued that Michael Schumacher deserves the honor for bringing international recognition to Kerpen and significantly boosting the popularity of motorsport in Germany.
Michael Schumacher, a seven-time Formula 1 world champion, spent much of his childhood in Kerpen, where he first discovered his passion for karting.
