Home-Based Players a ‘Disadvantage for South Africa’ – Broos
South Africa coach Hugo Broos has admitted that Bafana Bafana’s reliance on home-based players put them at a disadvantage at AFCON, after Round of 16 exit.
South Africa enjoyed possession but were punished by Cameroon’s efficiency, conceding twice from four shots on target. Broos said the difference came from experience.
“There are teams at the Cup of Nations with players who play in Europe… and that is a disadvantage for South Africa,” he said. He cited Cameroon, noting striker Christian Kofane “is playing for Bayer Leverkusen… He’s 19 years old.”
Broos stressed the Premier Soccer League cannot match Europe’s demands. “The level of the PSL compared with the level we had in the last weeks is very different,” he explained. He dismissed quick fixes, saying, “It’s not because you play once against Argentina or once against Ghana…”
Broos confirmed a review, adding, “We have to prepare for the World Cup…”
