The pinnacle of motorsport is celebrating its long-awaited return to Africa after a decades-long absence.

Details: Formula 1 officials have officially announced a 10-year contract to host a World Championship round in Rwanda. The African Grand Prix is set to join the series' racing calendar in the early 2030s.

The agreement follows lengthy consultations between the championship's promoters, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) and the Rwandan authorities. The race's official status has been secured under the Formula 1 African Grand Prix banner, with the support of Visit Rwanda.

A modern FIA Grade 1 circuit will be built in the country to host the event, designed to meet stringent environmental requirements and international safety standards.

Motorsport chiefs stressed that the return of racing to the continent underlines the truly global nature of the world championship and opens the door to a new audience.

It is worth noting that the last Formula 1 race on African soil took place in 1993, when Alain Prost claimed victory at the Kyalami circuit in South Africa. The gap between races in the premier class in Africa will stretch to almost 40 years.

Reminder: It has happened! Max Verstappen takes first place in the race in Malaysia!
