Herrera's Club World Cup could end prematurely. What's going on?
The Club World Cup had barely kicked off before headline-grabbing disciplinary actions surfaced, threatening to cut some players’ participation short.
Details: According to L'Equipe, former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera, now playing for Boca Juniors, has been handed a four-match suspension.
During the Latin American powerhouse's clash with Benfica, Herrera was forced off due to injury as early as the 20th minute. While on the bench, he lost his cool at the referee, who was reviewing a possible penalty for the Portuguese side via VAR.
Ultimately, stewards had to restrain the Spaniard from confronting the official, and for his outburst, Herrera received a four-match ban. At best, he could only feature in the Club World Cup if Boca Juniors make it to the quarterfinals. A similar fate has befallen his teammate Nicolas Figal, though his suspension results from a reckless foul on the pitch.
Reminder: Earlier, Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano revealed details about Lionel Messi's fitness and whether he'll play against Porto.
