Hero’s Return for Laryea After AFCON Storm
Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Ayi Laryea received a hero’s welcome after returning from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, despite controversy surrounding his officiating. Laryea, chosen by CAF to handle the Nigeria versus Morocco semi-final, became a major talking point as fans debated his decisions. Videos from Kotoka International Airport showed jubilant supporters drumming, singing and applauding as he arrived.
Reacting online, the official thanked fans, writing, “Much appreciated… much love.” While some Nigerian supporters criticised his performance, many Ghanaians praised his professionalism and integrity. Addressing the backlash, Laryea dismissed claims of bias linked to Ghana-Nigeria rivalry, insisting, “For me, I just do my refereeing job… I just apply the laws of the game,” during the tense tournament.
