Here we go! Paulo Fonseca leaves Lyon to return home
Sporting have settled on their new head coach. According to renowned insider Fabrizio Romano, Portuguese coach Paulo Fonseca will take charge of the Lisbon club, while current manager Rui Borges will leave his post next week.
The parties have already reached an agreement, although Fonseca's departure from Lyon also had to be settled before the move could be finalized. The French club had the coach under contract until the summer of 2027, but the two sides have now found a solution.
For the 53-year-old coach, this will mark a return to Portuguese football after a lengthy international career. Fonseca previously managed Porto, Braga and Shakhtar Donetsk, achieving significant success on the Ukrainian stage with the latter. His coaching career has also included spells at Roma, Lille and Milan.
The decision to change managers is linked to Sporting's disappointing results this season. The team have fallen nine points behind the Portuguese league leaders, while a run of recent setbacks has intensified the pressure on Borges.
