Here we go! Barcelona seal deal for Hamburg’s young gem

Barcelona have completed another move designed for the future. The Catalan club have reached an agreement to sign teenage defender Mikael Baza from Hamburger SV.

Details: Fabrizio Romano reports that Baza will join Barça Atlètic from Hamburg. The 16-year-old defender is set to sign a three-year contract until June 2029, with agent Pini Zahavi leading the operation.

The agreement concludes a pursuit that had been reported throughout the final week of August. Barcelona had been negotiating with Hamburger SV for the left-footed centre-back, who was viewed as one of the most promising defensive talents in the German club’s academy. Baza is the cousin of Bayern Munich defender Jonathan Tah, but his own career path will now continue in Spain. The teenager is expected to start at Barça Atlètic, where Barcelona can monitor his development before making any decision on a first-team promotion. This approach has become increasingly important for the Catalan club when recruiting younger players. Rather than placing instant pressure on a teenager, Barcelona can offer a gradual route through the reserve side and youth system. Reports before the agreement suggested that Baza was open to the move and had only one year remaining on his Hamburg contract. That situation gave Barcelona the chance to complete a deal for a player they believe can develop into a valuable long-term asset.

It’s worth noting that Baza was born in January 2010 and is still only 16 years old. The deal until 2029 gives Barcelona several seasons to develop the young defender without immediate expectations of a first-team role.
