Roma are pulling off a surprise move for one of Atalanta's most recognisable leaders.
Details: According to renowned insider Fabrizio Romano, Roma have reached a verbal agreement with Atalanta for the transfer of Marten de Roon. The Dutch midfielder wanted the move to the Italian capital, despite Atalanta initially having different plans for their captain, and the parties are now set to part ways.
The transfer will reunite de Roon with Gian Piero Gasperini, under whom the midfielder spent many years at Atalanta and became one of the key figures of the Bergamo side. Roma have been searching for another option in central midfield, and the experienced Dutchman is now set to become Gasperini's latest reinforcement.
For Atalanta, this means saying goodbye to their captain and one of the symbols of the club's most successful modern era. De Roon had not played a single minute in the team's opening official matches of the new campaign, but his departure still represents a major change in the dressing room.
It is worth noting that de Roon made 34 Serie A appearances for Atalanta during the 2025/26 season, scoring one goal and providing two assists. The 35-year-old midfielder has spent the vast majority of the last decade in Bergamo and has long worn the captain's armband.
