The highly anticipated Apertura 2025 clash between Atlético Tucumán and Independiente was postponed on Friday night due to severe weather conditions. The match, part of Matchday 14 of Argentina’s top division, was scheduled to be played at the Monumental José Fierro Stadium but was called off shortly before kickoff due to heavy rain and waterlogged pitch conditions.
According to TyC Sports, referee Darío Herrera made the decision after inspecting the field multiple times and concluding that the ball could not roll properly, particularly in the penalty areas and goal lines. "The field is in bad shape. There’s a lot of water in key areas, and the forecast says the rain will continue for a while," Herrera told reporters. "The pitch simply isn’t playable, and we have to protect the players’ physical integrity."
Unusually, both teams were already dressed and ready to walk onto the field when they were informed of the suspension. Images showed puddles forming across the turf, with players from Independiente commenting they encountered “pools of water” during warmups. Even Néstor Grindetti, president of Independiente, accompanied Herrera during one of the final field checks.
The league must now determine a new date for the fixture, which is crucial in shaping the standings in Group B. Independiente currently sits near the top and is fighting for playoff seeding, while Atlético Tucumán is looking to finish the season strong. Grindetti suggested that the only possible window for rescheduling might fall between Independiente’s upcoming matches against Deportivo Riestra and Rosario Central, as the team will be free from Copa Sudamericana commitments during that stretch.
However, Atlético has a match scheduled against Godoy Cruz on Monday, April 28, which could complicate matters. The league will now have to coordinate with both clubs to finalize a suitable date without affecting either team’s schedule or competitive balance.
