"He used to be a Real Madrid fan": Wojciech Szczęsny reveals his son now supports Barcelona
Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny resumed his playing career to accept an offer from Barcelona, a move that initially posed a dilemma within his family—his son was a devoted Real Madrid fan. However, Szczęsny has now revealed to La Gazzetta dello Sport that his son has changed allegiances.
"My son used to support Real Madrid, and that was his choice. There was nothing I could do about it. But after watching a few Barcelona games at the stadium, he gradually started realizing that Yamal isn’t bad at all—neither are Lewandowski or Pedri. And now, he gets excited when we win," Szczęsny shared.
According to his wife, during the Spanish Super Cup match between Barcelona and Real Madrid, young Liam had already switched sides, cheering for Barça in support of his father.
Szczęsny had to wait a long time for his debut with the Blaugrana, finally making his first appearance on January 4 in the Copa del Rey. So far, he has played five matches for Barcelona across all competitions, conceding six goals.
The Polish goalkeeper initially announced his retirement in the summer of 2024 after leaving Juventus, where he had played since 2017.
