He finally said it! Julián Álvarez apologizes to Atlético fans after turbulent summer
Álvarez has finally taken a step toward the Atlético supporters.
Details: Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez has publicly apologized to the club's supporters for the comments he made during the 2026 World Cup. Speaking to Movistar after Atlético's 1-0 victory over Deportivo de A Coruña, the Argentine admitted that both his words and the timing of them were a mistake.
Álvarez addressed the controversy in one extended statement, thanking both the fans and his teammates for their support and insisting that he is gradually returning to his best level.
“I wanted to apologize to our fans for my words during the World Cup. They were a mistake. Both the way I said them and the timing. Especially because I understand why the fans were angry. I would have been angry too if I were a fan. Even more so considering how much they’ve supported me. They’ve been very generous, and I really appreciate that. I also want to thank the team because they’ve supported me throughout this time. I’m gradually feeling better. I’m grateful to all my teammates because they’ve supported me. I’m working to improve. I’ve been feeling better in the last few matches, both physically and on the ball. I want to help the team and give my best. When you’re feeling good in life, it shows on the pitch. Even though we’re professionals, everything has an influence. I feel good and ready to compete for everything. Hopefully, through hard work and humility, I can turn this situation around,” Álvarez told Movistar.
The apology refers to the forward's World Cup comments amid his attempt to leave Atlético for Barcelona during the summer. The Madrid club refused to sell him to their La Liga rivals, while sections of the Atlético support subsequently greeted the Argentine with whistles and boos at home matches.
The 26-year-old is now trying to rebuild that relationship on the pitch. It is worth noting that Álvarez scored the only goal in Atlético's 1-0 victory over Deportivo de A Coruña, marking his second consecutive match on the scoresheet.
Reminder: Emergency response to the loss of a leader. PSG target Julián Álvarez
