The long-running legal saga involving Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has reached a turning point.

Details: According to the Daily Mail, following a retrial on the island of Syros, the 32-year-old Manchester United defender was found guilty of minor assault. The England international received a 15-month suspended prison sentence. Maguire himself was not present at the hearing, as he was preparing for an away Premier League clash against Newcastle at the time.

To recall, the incident that sparked the proceedings took place back in August 2020 during a family holiday on Mykonos. Maguire was arrested after a large-scale brawl outside a bar. The defender’s legal team argued that the altercation began when two unknown individuals injected an unidentified substance into Maguire’s sister, Daisy, causing her to lose consciousness. Maguire claimed he mistook undercover police officers for kidnappers and acted in self-defense, fearing for his life.

Despite the defense’s arguments about excessive force by Greek police, prosecutors insisted that the footballer acted aggressively, resisted arrest, and even attempted to bribe the officers. The current 15-month suspended sentence is more lenient than the original 2020 verdict (21 months), but Maguire’s lawyers still strongly disagree with the outcome.

Maguire is expected to appeal to the Supreme Court of Greece in a bid to fully clear his name.

Reminder: Manchester United have offered their captain Bruno Fernandes a new contract.
