Habib Diarra reflects on his decision to represent Senegal rather than France
The Senegalese has no regrets.
Habib Diarra chose to defend Senegal's colours internationally when he had the opportunity to play for France. The 22-year-old midfielder turned down the call-up from France's youth team in 2024 to join the Lions of Teranga.
Two years later, the Sunderland player won the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. A well-deserved reward for the midfielder. A few weeks after the Lions of Teranga's final victory in Morocco, the Senegalese player reflected on his decision to wear the colours of Senegal despite his childhood dream of playing for the French team.
‘I loved playing for France (as a youngster) but my heart spoke for itself. I have no regrets. I was born in Senegal; it fills me with pride to play for them,’ said Habib Diarra.
