Governor Umo Eno Pays Tribute to William Troost-Ekong After International Retirement
Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has paid glowing tribute to William Troost-Ekong following the Super Eagles captain’s decision to retire from international football.
In a statement delivered on Friday, 5 December 2025, through the Commissioner for Sports, Paul Bassey, Governor Eno hailed Troost-Ekong’s career as “illustrious and exemplary,” commending his professionalism, discipline, and leadership throughout his years of service to Nigeria.
“On behalf of my family and the people of our dear state, I sincerely congratulate our son, William Troost-Ekong, who has been a worthy ambassador of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria, both as a player and as captain of the Super Eagles,” the governor said through Bassey.
Troost-Ekong bows out with 80 senior caps for Nigeria and leaves behind a legacy defined by consistency and commitment. He notably captained the Super Eagles at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, guiding the team to a silver-medal finish and earning individual honours for his outstanding performances.
