Golf diplomacy on the green: South Korean president takes up golf to bond with Trump
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is preparing for diplomatic talks with newly re-elected U.S. President Donald Trump by honing his golf skills, reports CNN.
Trump, known for his long-standing passion for golf, has a reputation for using the sport to strengthen international relationships. In response, President Yoon seems ready to employ this tactic to win over the experienced world leader. He hopes that a few rounds on the course with Trump could yield political advantages for South Korea.
Yoon also recognizes that during Trump's previous term, he developed a surprisingly amicable rapport with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un—a situation Yoon is determined to avoid this time around. Perhaps, a shared love for golf might be the key to advancing his own diplomatic goals.
During his first presidency, Trump frequently played golf with Japan’s then-Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who tragically passed away in 2022. Trump also spoke fondly of golfer Bryson DeChambeau, with whom he previously enjoyed rounds on the green.
As a reminder, Donald Trump secured a victory in the U.S. presidential election, defeating Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. His inauguration is set for January 20, 2025.
