Golden Arrows Hold Mamelodi Sundowns in Dramatic 1-1 Draw
Golden Arrows held Mamelodi Sundowns to a 1-1 draw in the Betway Premiership at Mpumalanga Stadium on Wednesday night, in what was Manqoba Mngqithi’s first match back in charge of the club.
A Spirited Performance by Golden Arrows
Sundowns entered the match on a five-game winning streak, but their former coach Mngqithi led Arrows to a resilient display, frustrating the table-toppers.
Golden Arrows started aggressively, drawing an early save from Denis Onyango. Their pressure paid off in the 31st minute, when Keenan Phillips rose highest to head home a Cele freekick, giving Arrows the lead.
However, Phillips went from hero to villain before halftime. InHe gave Sundowns an opportunity to equalize in the 42nd minute by handling the ball inside the penalty area. In the 44th minute, Lucas Ribeiro took the initiative and calmly scored a panenka penalty to tie the score at one.
Sundowns Push for the Winner
Both sides started the second half strongly, but Sundowns dominated possession. Ribeiro almost put the visitors ahead in the 65th minute, but his volley flew over the bar after a well-worked move from Arthur Sales.
Sales himself had a chance in the 76th minute, but his shot went wide, as Sundowns continued to press for the winner. Van Rooi had a golden opportunity for Arrows in the 83rd minute, but he failed to capitalize after breaking past the Sundowns defense.
In the 88th minute, Arrows goalkeeper Isima Watenga made a stunning save to deny Sales and keep the scores level. Sundowns fans stayed behind to chant Ribeiro’s name, acknowledging his crucial contribution.
Orlando Pirates Keep Title Hopes Alive
Elsewhere, Orlando Pirates bounced back from their 2-0 loss to Marumo Gallants with a 1-0 win over Chippa United in Gqeberha.
A glancing header by Nkosinathi Sibisi from a Relebohile Mofokeng corner in first-half stoppage time secured the crucial win for the Buccaneers.
With four games in hand, Pirates remain 16 points behind Sundowns, keeping their title hopes alive.
