GOAT: Messi Sets Record for Most International Assists
Last night, Argentina defeated Peru 1-0 in the 12th round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, with the only goal of the match scored by Lautaro Martínez, assisted by the legendary Lionel Messi. This assist added yet another record to Messi’s illustrious career.
Details: The assist marked Messi’s 58th for the Argentine national team, making him the all-time leader in assists at the international level.
However, Messi shares the top spot with U.S. legend Landon Donovan, who also recorded 58 assists for his country. Neymar ranks third with 57 international assists.
Thanks to their win over Peru, Argentina now leads the World Cup qualifying standings with 25 points, 5 points ahead of second-place Uruguay.
Reminder: In Argentina’s previous match against Paraguay (1-2), Lionel Messi was involved in a heated exchange, where he harshly criticized the Brazilian referee.
