The current edition of the UEFA Champions League has officially gone down in history as one of the most spectacular ever.
Details: After all the first-leg play-off matches wrapped up, the stats told an incredible story: 68 goals were scored across the 16 round of 16 fixtures.
This is a modern-era record. According to Stats Foot, the last time this stage of the tournament saw such a goal rush was way back in the 1959/60 season, when teams netted a total of 74 goals.
Since then, for more than sixty years, knockout football hasn't seen such open, attacking play.
This surge in goals was fueled by some wild second-leg scorelines, including Newcastle's 7-2 thrashing and Liverpool's emphatic victory over Galatasaray.
Reminder: Barcelona defender Gerard Martin threw down the gauntlet to Atletico after the Champions League clash with Newcastle.
