Girona officially received permission to play in the UEFA Champions League
Last season, Girona delivered phenomenal results. The club, in only its second consecutive season in La Liga, managed to finish in third place, trailing only Real Madrid and Barcelona. This third-place finish guaranteed the Catalan club a spot in the group stage of the Champions League, marking their first-ever participation in a European competition.
However, after securing their Champions League spot, questions arose about UEFA's approval for the tournament. The issue lay with Manchester City. Both Manchester City and Girona are part of the City Football Group, and UEFA rules state that two entities owned by the same company cannot compete in the same European competition.
As a result, the Spanish club needed to make significant structural changes to comply with the requirements. According to Marca, the Catalans managed to meet these requirements and satisfied UEFA. Consequently, Girona has been granted permission to participate in the next season's Champions League.
This isn't the first time such a situation has occurred. Previously, a similar issue arose with another Manchester club. Following the 2015/16 season, Manchester United and Nice both qualified for the Europa League. Since they were partially owned by INEOS, the teams had to make the necessary changes to participate in the tournament.
