Giakoumakis' Future at Cruz Azul in Doubt
Giorgos Giakoumakis’ days at Cruz Azul may be numbered. The Greek striker, signed in the 2024 Apertura after a productive stint with Atlanta United, has struggled to make a consistent impact in Mexico. Injuries have plagued his time in Liga MX, sidelining him for around 40% of the matches. According to Marca USA, clubs in MLS have shown renewed interest in bringing the forward back across the border — and Cruz Azul might be open to the idea.
Despite recording nine goals and eight assists in 31 appearances, Giakoumakis has missed key games, including matchdays 1, 12, and 13 due to fitness issues. With a reported market value of $9.5 million, his transfer could provide financial relief and room for reinforcements.
In the meantime, Mexican forward Ángel Sepúlveda is making a strong case for more minutes. Nicknamed “El Ángel del Gol,” Sepúlveda has scored 13 goals since joining in 2024, often coming off the bench. While he’s not a guaranteed starter, neither is Gabriel “El Toro” Fernández — creating a three-way battle up front as coach Vicente Sánchez rotates his options.
Cruz Azul currently sits second in Liga MX and remains alive in the Concacaf Champions Cup. As the summer window approaches, decisions will need to be made — and Giakoumakis’ status could be one of the first to change.
