GFA Boss Kurt Okraku Expresses Disappointment Over Iñaki Williams’ Retirement from Ghana National Team

Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kurt Okraku has expressed the association’s disappointment following Iñaki Williams’ decision to retire from international football after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Athletic Bilbao captain recently announced his decision to step away from the Black Stars after Ghana’s campaign at the tournament hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Speaking on Asempa FM, the GFA boss Okraku admitted that Williams’ retirement came as a disappointment to the GFA but said the circumstances surrounding the forward’s decision needed to be understood.

“I was disturbed by his decision. The entire Football Association was disappointed, but when you hear him out, you understand his situation.

He has been playing through a lot of pain and injuries. We have to appreciate what he has done for Ghana.” (Asempa FM)

Williams switched his international allegiance from Spain to Ghana in 2022 and went on to make 28 appearances for the Black Stars, scoring two goals.

His decision to retire brings an end to his international career with Ghana after representing the country at major competitions, including the FIFA World Cup.
