Gavin Hunt, the veteran coach of SuperSport United, led his 1000th South African football game, marking an incredible milestone. However, a floodlight malfunction forced the cancellation of the Betway Premiership match against Golden Arrows, thus the festivities were short-lived.

Hunt, 60, surpassed Gordon Igesund's previous record of 816 games to become the first coach in South African history to achieve this milestone. He is one of the most successful players in domestic football, having won league titles at SuperSport United and Bidvest Wits during the course of his 27-year career.

The eagerly anticipated match began with an early goal from Christian Saile of SuperSport at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in Pretoria. Velemseni Ndwandwe equalized for Arrows in response, but power problems caused the stadium to go dark just 22 minutes into the match.

Despite initial hopes for a quick resolution, the floodlight failure persisted, forcing match officials to call off the game at halftime with the score tied at 1-1. Players' and supporters' frustration grew as worries about the continuous load-shedding that impacts South African football reappeared.

This crucial matchup between the two struggling mid-table teams is now up to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) to reschedule. Golden Arrows, in 11th place, and SuperSport United, in 12th place, are tied for 20 points and are looking for crucial victories to move up the standings.

Hunt's historic game was supposed to be a triumphant occasion, but instead it brought to light more serious infrastructure problems that the league is facing. Regarding the repeat date, the PSL is anticipated to make an official announcement shortly.

What’s Next?

Whether the game is replayed or a different choice is made will be decided by the PSL. While supporters wait for clarification, both teams turn their attention back to their forthcoming league games in the hopes of avoiding additional losses.
