Gareca’s High-Stakes Choice: Stay with Chile or Risk Financial Fallout
Ricardo Gareca’s future as Chile’s head coach hangs in the balance ahead of a pivotal meeting with the Chilean Football Association (ANFP) on Friday. As reported by El Mercurio, the Argentine manager must decide whether to remain in charge amid mounting pressure or resign and negotiate a partial payout. His contract, set to expire in six months, includes a $1.5 million termination clause, but the ANFP hopes to avoid that cost by encouraging his voluntary departure.
Gareca’s position weakened after Chile’s World Cup qualifying draw against Ecuador, where fans loudly demanded his exit. ANFP officials suggest he might “reconsider” following the backlash, potentially agreeing to a reduced settlement. However, if he stays and Chile fails to qualify mathematically by June —a likely outcome—, he would forfeit the remainder of his salary. Complicating matters, the ANFP faces a coaching crisis: no reputable candidate is expected to take over for the final four qualifiers, described as “brutal” due to Chile’s slim chances. Interim solutions, like promoting U20 coach Nicolás Córdova, are deemed impractical, leaving the federation in a precarious position.
