Gallardo Thanks River Fans and Offers Apology After Elimination Gallardo Thanks River Fans and Offers Apology After Elimination

Marcelo Gallardo didn’t shy away from emotion or responsibility after River Plate’s exit from the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. As reported by La Página Millonaria, the Argentine coach addressed the press in Seattle following his team’s 2-0 defeat to Inter Milan and made a heartfelt statement to the 30,000 fans who filled the Lumen Field stands: “I want to apologize.”

River started strong, holding their own against a high-caliber Inter side. But the match shifted dramatically after Lucas Martínez Quarta was sent off. Down to ten men, River lost control and saw the Italians secure the win that sealed the Argentine side’s elimination from the tournament.

Amid the disappointment, Gallardo focused on the fans’ unwavering support: “What the people did was moving. Not just their presence, but the way they supported us. Being so far from home and having this kind of massive backing deserves gratitude—and also an apology for not continuing in the tournament.”

Speaking later with DAZN, Gallardo pointed to the red card as the turning point: “Unfortunately, the sending off meant we couldn’t hold on and fight until the end. It’s a shame, especially for the fans who came out in numbers to support us.”

Despite the early exit, Gallardo highlighted the team’s intent: “In the first half, even without some key players, we had a clear plan to play and press against a good team, physically and technically. But we fell short when it came to decision-making. We tried, but it didn’t work out.”
