River Plate has initiated formal talks to sign Nicolás Fernández Mercau, currently playing for Elche in Spain’s second division. According to journalist Germán García Grova, the Argentine midfielder, formerly of San Lorenzo, is once again on Marcelo Gallardo’s wishlist and aware of the club's renewed interest.

So far, River’s only addition this transfer window is Lautaro Rivero, who returned from a loan spell at Central Córdoba. But with the board actively pursuing reinforcements, Mercau has emerged as a serious target. Negotiations are also underway with Argentinos Juniors for Román Vega, but the focus now extends to Europe.

Fernández Mercau, now deployed primarily as an attacking midfielder after starting his career as a left-back, is under contract with Elche for two more years. The Spanish club is reportedly open to considering an offer—if the player signals his willingness to return to Argentina.

The 24-year-old has a current market value of €2.5 million, according to Transfermarkt. If the deal progresses, River would gain a technically skilled and positionally flexible player with European experience. The next move depends on Mercau’s response, which is expected in the coming days.
