Gabon Coach Thierry Mouyouma: “Nigeria Are Favourites, But We’re Not Afraid”

Gabon manager Thierry Mouyouma has admitted that Nigeria are clear favourites ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff, but insists that the Panthers are not intimidated by the three-time African champions.

Speaking ahead of the decisive clash, Mouyouma acknowledged the Super Eagles’ pedigree and depth of talent but emphasized that Gabon are prepared to fight fearlessly.

“We know that Nigeria, a great African team, are the favourites — and our underdog status suits us just fine,” Mouyouma said.

“Nigeria will be under more pressure, which is understandable. But while we respect them for everything they represent, we’re not afraid. We know the quality of their squad and the dangers posed by players like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman. And I think Nigeria knows us very well too.”

Nigeria's head coach Eric Chelle has called up a strong 23-man squad for Thursday’s clash, featuring key stars such as Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, Samuel Chukwueze, Frank Onyeka, and Tolu Arokodare.
