Gabon head coach Thierry Mouyouma has sent a clear warning to the Super Eagles ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff, insisting that the days when stronger teams automatically prevailed are gone.

Speaking at a press conference, Mouyouma stressed that modern football is decided by teamwork, tactics, and mental strength—not star power. “It won't be a case of solving the problems on an individual level. It's going to be on a tactical level. The challenge today is to keep up with the top-ranked teams,” he said.

The Gabon boss noted that his team would approach the game against Nigeria with the same discipline used against African powerhouses like Senegal, Morocco, and Ivory Coast.

He added:

The Nigeria we are facing was a top team in the group and in the end they did not qualify because they were not first in the group. So what used to be said that the strongest always win does not exist today.

Mouyouma pointed out that Gabon’s players can match the continent’s best despite being lower in FIFA rankings. He noted that the Panthers finished the qualifiers with 25 points—the highest among the four playoff nations—adding that this total would have been enough to qualify directly in other groups.

He likened the playoffs to the knockout stage of the Africa Cup of Nations, calling it a test of tactical precision and resilience. “If Gabon plans to continue to grow... we have to be able to compete with the big African nations, and Nigeria is one of them,” he concluded.
