Fulham and Nigeria defender Calvin Bassey shared an emotional moment at AFCON 2025 after Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Tanzania in Fès. The 25-year-old played a key role, with both goals assisted by his club and international teammate Alex Iwobi.

Before kick-off, the pair reflected on their journeys and the honour of representing Nigeria on Africa’s biggest stage. Born in Italy to Nigerian parents and raised in London, Bassey’s path was difficult, leaving him without a club as a teenager. During the conversation, he expressed gratitude, saying, “I don't understand what God has done in my life”… adding, “10, 11 years ago, I had no club… Now, I'm representing my national team. It's crazy.”

Bassey has since made over 220 appearances.
