35-year-old Team USA basketball player Brittney Griner, who spent 10 months in a Russian prison, is set to sign a deal with an undisclosed club.
Details: In 2022, Brittney Griner was detained at an airport in Russia, where she had arrived for a tournament. The reason for her detention was a cartridge containing cannabis oil, which the athlete herself said helped her cope with anxiety attacks.
Griner was released after 10 months, following a high-profile prisoner exchange in which the U.S. administration traded her to the Russian side for arms dealer Viktor Bout.
The athlete will sign a three-year, $1 million contract, made possible thanks to a recently ratified collective bargaining agreement that provides for higher salaries for WNBA players.
Griner is a WNBA champion with Phoenix, and in the most recent season, at the age of 35, she averaged 9.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.
