French referees are regularly appointed to officiate the biggest matches under the auspices of UEFA and FIFA. However, a young French referee recently found himself at the center of a major scandal.
Details: Towards the end of the match between the amateur clubs Montbazon and Luire, the home team players were very dissatisfied with the referee's actions.
As a result, Montbazon's goalkeeper began assaulting the referee, and two of his teammates joined in, starting to hit the referee and spit at him.
The match was ultimately abandoned, and the Montbazon club management issued a statement expressing deep regret over the incident.
This culminated in the resignation of Montbazon's head coach, and the club withdrew from the Indre-et-Loire district's second division competition.
Reminder: Lyon's head coach Paulo Fonseca is on the verge of a lengthy suspension due to an attack on a referee.
