In the semifinal match of the 2024 European Championship against Spain, it was the last international appearance for French striker Olivier Giroud. He announced his retirement from the national team.

Coach Didier Deschamps expressed regret after the match, stating:

"It's unfortunate because Giroud could have ended his career triumphantly. That would have been better. I want to thank him for everything he has done. We have many young players in our team who will help us in the future."

Giroud made his debut for the national team at the age of 25. On November 3, 2011, under the guidance of coach Laurent Blanc, Olivier Giroud was called up for friendly matches against the USA and Belgium. Just eight days later, he came on in the second half against the USA, replacing Kevin Gameiro.

In his third match for France, Giroud started for the first time and scored his first goal for the national team, hitting the net against Germany in the 21st minute.

Interestingly, Olivier Giroud never played for any other youth levels for the French national team before his senior debut. In 2001, he was called up by coach Pierre Mankowski for the U16 national team to participate in a training camp at the Clairefontaine academy but did not play for the team. After that, Giroud was not called up for any youth national teams.

For the senior national team of France, Olivier Giroud played 137 matches and scored 57 goals, setting a record for the national team. Giroud surpassed Thierry Henry's record and became France's top scorer. This milestone was achieved during the 2022 World Cup in the Round of 16 match against Poland.

Together with the national team, Giroud reached the final of major tournaments three times. In 2016, they lost in the Euro final; in 2022, they won the World Cup silver, and their main victory came in 2018 when they won the World Cup gold. Interestingly, Giroud did not score a single goal in that tournament.

On June 4, 2019, President Emmanuel Macron awarded the Legion of Honour to all players of the French national team.
