Fossati Challenges Palmeiras: “It's Time for Their Streak to End”

Universitario de Deportes' head coach, Jorge Fossati, has issued a bold statement ahead of their Copa Libertadores Round of 16 clash against undefeated Palmeiras. “Statistics are meant to be broken. They've had six unbeaten matches; it's time for that to end,” Fossati told GOLPERÚ, as reported by La República.
Palmeiras, under the guidance of Abel Ferreira, was the only team to secure 18 points in the group stage, solidifying their status as title contenders. However, Fossati remains undaunted, believing Universitario can cause an upset. “I don't know if in previous editions there's been a team that achieved 18 points in six matches. Statistics are meant to be broken,” he reiterated.
Universitario returns to the Libertadores Round of 16 after a 15-year absence. The first leg is scheduled for August 14 at Lima's Estadio Monumental, kicking off at 7:30 p.m. local time . The second leg will take place in São Paulo, where Palmeiras will have home advantage.
In the meantime, the Peruvian side is undergoing intensive preparations during the Apertura Tournament break due to the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers. Fossati aims to keep the team competitive and fine-tune strategies to face the formidable Brazilian squad. “We're undergoing necessary physical reconditioning. Advancing to the Libertadores Round of 16 overshadows the local tournament, but we're striving to compete on both fronts,” the coach noted.
The challenge is significant, but confidence within the squad is high. Universitario dreams of making history by ending Palmeiras' unbeaten run.
