Former world boxing champion detained in Mexico after fatal accident

Former world featherweight champion Orlando Salido, who held the IBF title in 2010 and the WBO title from 2011 to 2013, 2013 to 2014, and 2014 to 2015, was arrested early this morning by Mexican police following a fatal accident.

According to talkSPORT, Salido was driving his Dodge RAM pickup around 2:30 AM local time (11:30 AM CET) when he lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road, crashing into a house. The impact hit the bedroom wall of the house where a couple was sleeping.

Emergency responders were called to the scene, but the 61-year-old man in the house died while receiving assistance. His 53-year-old wife sustained serious injuries and is currently hospitalized.

Orlando Salido himself was also hospitalized and is in serious condition. However, the former boxer is under custody while the Sonora prosecutor's office investigates the circumstances of the accident.

Photographs circulating in the Mexican media show that the impact was so severe that the vehicle completely breached the wall and ended up almost entirely inside the house.
