Former Uruguay Coach Slams Bielsa: “A Disappointment Behind Closed Doors” Former Uruguay Coach Slams Bielsa: “A Disappointment Behind Closed Doors”

Carlos Nicola, former goalkeeper coach for Uruguay’s national team, has strongly criticized Marcelo Bielsa, describing his time under the Argentine manager as “a major disappointment.” In an interview with Infobae, Nicola said, “What you see from the outside doesn’t match the reality inside. It wasn’t a healthy environment.”

Nicola, who had been with the Uruguayan federation since 2012 and joined the senior staff in 2021, was dismissed in May 2024 after Bielsa’s arrival. The coach implemented short-term contracts for staff not originally part of his setup, a move that led to the departure of several long-serving members, including Nicola.

“Bielsa was always respectful to me personally, but the working atmosphere was tense,” Nicola said. “There was verbal abuse, psychological pressure, and unnecessary stress. Those things became normalized under his leadership, and they’re simply not okay.”

Now at Cruz Azul, Nicola expressed concern about Uruguay’s current form: “The team has only one win in their last eleven matches. Qualification for the World Cup isn’t at risk due to the format, but the environment is troubling.”

The former Nacional goalkeeper also reflected on his playing days, including a brief stint at San Lorenzo and experiences in Brazil, Colombia, and Guatemala. He retired at 34 and transitioned smoothly into coaching and youth development, crediting that new path for avoiding the post-retirement blues.
