Former UK Sports Minister Calls for Scraping Financial Fair Play in Premier League

The rules governing stability and sustainability in the English Premier League have been the subject of much debate, as smaller clubs often face penalties while giants like Chelsea and Manchester City typically avoid punishment. This has fueled the idea of scrapping financial fair play altogether.

Details: Former UK Sports Minister, now Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, during a hearing on the creation of an independent regulator in football, asserted that the current sustainability and stability rules are failing to fulfill their purpose. He advocated for transferring financial oversight, including to an independent regulator.

Quote: “We could say ‘take PSR off the Premier League’" They’ve shown themselves not to be fit to handle it fairly. I actually think there's an argument to be made for that. But we've come at it slightly more subtly and carefully so the Premier League retains its role but has this backstop oversight from the Regulator.”" Burnham quoted by Henry Winter.

Reminder: An ongoing hearing is currently investigating 115 alleged financial fair play violations by Manchester City. A verdict is expected in the spring of 2025.
