Previously, Coentrão had stated that he wanted to dedicate his post-football life to the sea, following in the footsteps of his father, who was a fisherman.
During his career, Coentrão played 101 matches for Real Madrid and made 52 appearances for the Portuguese national team. He also played for Benfica, Sporting Lisbon, Monaco, Nacional, and ended his career with Rio Ave.
