Former NFL running back Wendell Smallwood, 30, has been indicted on three felony charges, according to TMZ Sports. On October 28, federal prosecutors charged Smallwood with fraud, conspiracy to commit fraud, and conspiracy to defraud the IRS.

Court documents allege that Smallwood engaged in tax fraud and submitted false applications for COVID-19 pandemic relief programs for several businesses he owned during 2020-2021.

The trial is scheduled to begin in December, just before Christmas. If convicted, Smallwood faces up to 50 years in prison.

Smallwood’s attorney, Mark B. Sheppard, stated that his client has agreed to cooperate with investigators and has assisted in the ongoing investigation.

Smallwood began his NFL career in 2016 when he was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles. After leaving the Eagles in 2019, he went on to play for the Washington Redskins (now Commanders) and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
