It appears that Nottingham Forest has entirely lost faith in their goalkeepers, Matt Turner and Odysseas Vlachodimos. During the winter transfer window, the club sought a new guardian for their goalposts.

They endeavored to entice the former Manchester United goalkeeper, David de Gea, who has been a free agent for over half a year, as reported by The Athletic. Forest proposed a short-term deal to the player, which could have been advantageous for both parties. The team could acquire an experienced player with a lengthy tenure in the Premier League, while the Spanish goalkeeper could showcase himself in a favorable light, ensuring a promising transfer in the summer.

However, de Gea declined the offer, leading Nottingham Forest to sign a contract with Matz Sels.

De Gea remains a free agent, and he might find himself without football for an entire year. The Spaniard could have continued playing for Manchester United this season if the club had not withdrawn the offer for a new contract, opting to pursue Andre Onana instead. Despite persistent rumors of a move to Saudi Arabia yielding nothing concrete, both Bayern Munich and Real Madrid were linked with de Gea last summer when they had goalkeeper needs, but those positions have since been filled.

At 33 years old, de Gea is by no means considered old for a goalkeeper. However, the longer he remains away from football, the closer he gets to retirement. If he fails to secure a new club in the summer, the likelihood of anything other than ending his career becomes minimal.
