Pictured on the NBA logo. Former Lakers player Jerry West dies
At the age of 86, former Los Angeles Lakers player Jerry West has passed away, as reported by insider Shams Charania.
West played for the Lakers from 1960 to 1974. In 1969, he was named the NBA Finals MVP. In 1972, he became an NBA champion.
Throughout his career, West participated in 14 NBA All-Star Games, was named to the All-NBA Team 12 times, and made the NBA All-Defensive Team five times. He scored 25,192 points, provided 6,238 assists, and grabbed 5,366 rebounds, averaging 27 points, 6.7 assists, and 5.8 rebounds per game. Among retired players, only Michael Jordan, Elgin Baylor, and Wilt Chamberlain have averaged more than 27 points per game.
West also achieved tremendous success as an NBA executive, becoming an eight-time NBA champion as a general manager (six times with the Lakers and twice with the Golden State Warriors). He was named NBA Executive of the Year twice (1995, 2004).
Jerry West is famously depicted in the NBA logo. The modern NBA emblem first appeared on the cover of the NBA Guide and the statistical information book in late 1969 and was officially adopted in the 1971/72 season. Designed by Alan Siegel, the logo features the silhouette of a player dribbling the ball, widely believed to be based on West's silhouette.
