Former Nairobi City Stars head coach Nicholas Muyoti is set to be named as an assistant coach for the Harambee Stars under new head coach Benni McCarthy. The South African legend is expected to be officially unveiled by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) on Friday, February 27.

McCarthy's Appointment and Technical Team

McCarthy, a former Manchester United first-team coach, will bring in former South African goalkeeper Joseph Moeneeb as goalkeeping coach and Vasili Manousakis as assistant coach. FKF has also opted to include a local coach in the technical bench, with Muyoti emerging as the top candidate for the role.

Preparation for World Cup Qualifiers

With his appointment confirmed, McCarthy and his team will immediately begin preparations for Kenya’s upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The Harambee Stars will face the Gambia on March 17 before hosting Gabon six days later at Nyayo Stadium.

Muyoti’s Coaching and Playing Career

A former Kenyan international, Muyoti has a wealth of local and international football experience. Prior to playing for Singapore's Sporting Afrique, AFC Leopards, and Thika United, he captained Kenya and won the 2002 Castle Lager Cup. He has had coaching positions with Nairobi City Stars and AFC Leopards.

FKF’s Long-Term Vision

McCarthy’s appointment comes after Turkish coach Engin Firat failed to qualify Kenya for AFCON 2025. FKF President Hussein Mohammed has emphasized strengthening the national team’s technical bench to ensure long-term success.
