Ecuadorian footballer Pedro Perlaza, who was previously kidnapped by unknown assailants, has been released by the police, reports The Sun.
According to local police, Perlaza was freed during a rescue operation. A shootout ensued as his captors used firearms against law enforcement officers.
The perpetrators managed to escape, but police believe they were wounded during the gunfight. Perlaza and another individual, who was also kidnapped, have been reunited with their families.
Colonel Diego Velastegui, the head of the local police, confirmed that both Perlaza and the other person are alive but emphasized that they had been mistreated.
