Pedro Caixinha has emerged as a strong candidate to take over as head coach of Chivas ahead of the Apertura 2025, according to Fútbol Total. The Portuguese manager, who previously led Cruz Azul to silverware, is reportedly being considered by club president Amaury Vergara as a replacement for Gerardo Espinoza.

Although Espinoza is still fighting to qualify Chivas for the Play-In phase, the club's management appears unconvinced by his performance. With the Apertura on the horizon, Chivas has already begun exploring options to lead a more ambitious and stable project.

Caixinha, recently released from his role at Santos FC in Brazil, has a well-established record in Mexican football. He previously coached Santos Laguna and Cruz Azul, securing five domestic trophies in total. These include a Liga MX title, Copa MX and Campeón de Campeones with Santos Laguna, as well as a Copa MX and Supercopa MX with Cruz Azul.

Reports indicate that Chivas had held talks with Caixinha in the past, but no deal was reached. Now, with the coach available and his familiarity with Liga MX intact, his name has resurfaced as a viable choice for the Guadalajara side’s long-term project.
