Former Boca Prospect Alleges Pressure from Riquelme’s Inner Circle
Leonel Coira, once regarded as a top talent in Boca Juniors’ academy, has made explosive claims about his time at the club, alleging political pressure from the inner circle of club president Juan Román Riquelme. In an interview with TNT Sports, the 21-year-old midfielder said his path to the first team was blocked after refusing to sign with an agent linked to Riquelme's brother. Source: Bolavip.
“I was promoted to the first team by Miguel Russo when I was 17 and was doing really well,” Coira explained. “Then Riquelme’s brother offered to represent me. I declined, and everything went downhill from there.” He further claimed that former Boca player and current director Marcelo Delgado offered him an alternative arrangement: signing with their group under a different name, which he also refused.
Coira says his refusal had immediate consequences. “I was benched, left out of matchday squads, even when I was performing well. They slowly pushed me out,” he recounted. He ultimately left Boca and has since struggled to find stability, most recently parting ways with Godoy Cruz.
He also pointed to Valentín "Colo" Barco as an example of internal resistance. “They tried to push him out too, but he won over the fans. Riquelme recently said he wasn’t ready—but he didn’t help him prepare either.”
The midfielder’s allegations have stirred debate among Boca supporters, raising questions about power dynamics within the club’s leadership and youth system.
