Details: Liverpool's chief executive and sporting director addressed the fans in light of the tragedy that struck Diogo Jota:
There is nothing we can say at this moment to ease the pain of such a devastating tragedy. We are all left completely heartbroken right now.
In such heartbreaking circumstances, we must acknowledge the shared grief we are experiencing, pay tribute to our Diogo, and offer unwavering support to his family, who remain our absolute priority at this time.
Diogo's wife, Rute, their three wonderful children, his parents, and their extended family are facing an unimaginable loss. This tragedy has taken from us not only Diogo but also his brother, Andre Silva. We mourn them both equally. We must respect the family's privacy and give them the space to grieve as they need. - the statement reads.
The management also made it clear to fans that Diogo will be honored in every way, and his shirt number will be forever associated with Jota in Liverpool's history:
Of course, we – his Liverpool family – are also trying to come to terms with what has happened. As his teammates, friends, and colleagues, we are overwhelmed with shock and grief. We know that our fans, his national team, former clubs and teammates, as well as the wider football community, share in this sorrow. This is a tragedy that goes far beyond Liverpool Football Club.
In the coming days, as a club, we will strive to honor our beloved number 20 with the respect and love he so richly deserves. We will ensure these tributes are meaningful and inclusive for our supporters, for whom Diogo meant so much.
Right now, we express our love, filled with deep sorrow and pain. We have lost someone truly irreplaceable.
Rest in peace, Diogo. - the Liverpool management told the club’s official website.
