For the first time in history! 18-year-old South African Connor Doig wins junior Australian Open
On Saturday, January 31, Melbourne played host to the final match of the junior Australian Open doubles tournament. This showdown is sure to go down in the annals of South African tennis history.
18-year-old South African Connor Doig, paired with Bulgaria's Dimitar Kisimov, captured the junior Grand Slam title in Australia. The duo overpowered local favorites Ismaili and Kose in straight sets—6-3, 6-4. After the victory, Doig admitted that the result came as a surprise to them.
We absolutely did not expect to make it to the final. We took it one match at a time. From the very first round, we knew anything could happen. We fought for every point. In tennis, anything is possible. We just kept doing everything we could. There was more pressure in the final, but we just tried to keep things simple. We stuck to our winning strategy, focusing on each rally individually.
It's worth noting that a South African had only twice before claimed the Australian Open title. Both of those triumphs date back to the early 1980s, when Johan Kriek won the singles title back-to-back in 1981 and 1982. Interestingly, Kriek was already competing under the US flag during his title defense in 1982, having changed his sporting nationality.
This latest success by Connor Doig is unprecedented: for the first time in history, a young tennis player from South Africa has managed to secure a title at the Australian Open—regardless of whether it's in singles or doubles.
