Football reform on two continents: Africa and Asia to launch Nations Leagues
Major changes are on the horizon for international football as national teams prepare for a shake-up. Africa and Asia have announced the creation of new tournaments that will reshape the traditional international fixture calendar.
The Confederation of African Football has officially confirmed the reform of the Africa Cup of Nations. Starting in 2028, the tournament will be held every four years instead of every two, breaking from its long-standing tradition. To fill the gaps between continental championships, Africa will launch the African Nations League—a national team competition modeled after UEFA's Nations League.
Asia has decided to follow a similar path. The Asian Football Confederation has announced plans to introduce the Asian Nations League, with the main goal of developing and strengthening international football across the continent.
The exact launch date for the competition has not yet been specified, but the AFC emphasized that the new tournament will not affect the Asian Cup, which will continue to be held every four years as before.
