Fluminense to Earn Millions Thanks to Chelsea’s New Signing… Against Palmeiras
Fluminense is set to receive an unexpected financial boost in the middle of the Club World Cup — and from an unlikely source: Chelsea’s signing of João Pedro.
The Brazilian forward, who came through Fluminense’s youth system, played just 29 matches and scored five goals for the first team before being sold to Watford in 2020 for €11 million. Since then, João Pedro's value has skyrocketed. After a stint with Brighton, he was just signed by Chelsea for €60 million (roughly R$385 million).
Thanks to FIFA’s solidarity mechanism, Fluminense is entitled to 3.5% of that fee, amounting to around R$13.5 million. The timing is striking: João Pedro was officially unveiled in Miami, where Chelsea is preparing for the Club World Cup quarterfinals — and could debut this Friday against Palmeiras, one of Fluminense’s main rivals at the national level.
This windfall serves as a reminder of the long-term value of Fluminense’s academy, which continues to yield both footballing and financial returns. As the team fights for continental glory, it also reaps rewards from a player now wearing blue in the biggest stage of club football.
