Fluminense Fall Short Against Chelsea But Take Pride in Their Effort

Fluminense’s surprising journey at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States came to an end with a 2–0 loss to Chelsea in East Rutherford. Though the Brazilian side had hopes of reaching the final, veteran goalkeeper Fábio acknowledged the English team’s superiority, while emphasizing the pride the squad feels for their performance.

“We fought until the end, but that’s football. I’m grateful to God for the opportunity. We gave our all — sweat, grit, determination. The desire to advance was never lacking,” said Fábio, the team’s most experienced player.

That same sentiment was echoed by midfielder Nonato, who urged his teammates to leave with their heads held high. “Of course it’s tough, we wanted to be in the final. But we gave it everything, pushed ourselves to the limit. Chelsea played a great match and deserved the win, but we competed with honor.”

Though eliminated, Fluminense exit the tournament with dignity, having stood their ground against top teams in the world and producing a memorable run which included a famous win against Inter Milan. Now, their attention turns to the domestic level and the Copa Sudamericana, where they still await either América de Cali or Bahia in the Round of 16.
